Hannah Contreras is an MSE Senior and recent recipient of an NSF Fellowship award. Learn More about Hannah and her time at Cornell below.
What inspired you to choose your field of study?
I chose to study materials science because it has fundamental and direct applications in renewable energy solutions, especially solar, which are crucial to addressing the climate change crisis.
Why did you choose Cornell?
I chose Cornell because of its reputation for excellence. Its motto "any person, any study" resonates deeply with me, especially in how that applies to research opportunities, and Ithaca-Collegetown nexus struck me as a fun place to live as well.
What hobbies do you have in your spare time?
Much of my spare time is spent building solar panels for Cornell's Solar Boat student project team! In the winters, I like to ski at Greek Peak and the rest of the Northeast with friends, and I like to slackline and hangout on the slope when it's warmer.
Do you have any advice for incoming Engineering students?
It seems simple but make study buddies early and often. Also, remember while it is important to stay focused, it is also important to take time to relax and enjoy yourself.
What is next for you?
I will be attending the University of Washington's Chemistry graduate program as an NSF Fellow next semester.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
In 10 years, I hope to have obtained my PhD and be starting my career disrupting the energy sector by introducing new, cheap, and highly efficient solar solutions.
