Luis Estevez came to Cornell by way of the University of Maine at Orono where he earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, graduating Magna Cum Laude. While at the University of Maine, Lou was an integral part of a four person team that designed, built and tested a long distance dog sled to be run in the Alaskan Iditarod. A summer internship investigating nonlinear acoustics at Los Alamos National Laboratory inspired Lou to pursue a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering in order to realize his full potential. At Cornell, Lou joined the Giannelis research group and began working on ionic polymer composite systems. Lou is currently investigating ice templation as a route to fabricate novel materials with tailorable properties and functionalities.
