PhD graduate student Thomas Ugras, from the Robinson group in MSE, has won the prestigious Webb graduate fellowship from The Kavli Institute at Cornell (KIC). As a KIC graduate fellow, Thomas plans to develop a platform that will enable accurate detection of electron spin filtering by chiral nanomaterials with a state-of-the-art very low energy electron diffraction (VLEED) detector. This project and the technology developed throughout will create tools to unlock deeper insight into chiral spin-selective materials for spintronic applications. He will use the new tool to characterize the spin filtering efficiency of chiral magic sized nanocluster films that the Robinson group has been developing.
