The silicon-based integrated-circuit technology that has led to the information revolution of the past half-century has been driven by materials science. This has been especially true in the past decade with the introduction of a tremendous range of new materials in integrated circuits. Now the thrust is starting to move to non-Si-based electronics: complex oxides, organic semiconductors, and transparent transistors.
