The field of nanotechnology is a diverse and rapidly-evolving area in Materials Science and Engineering. Spanning the realm between molecular compounds and macroscopic objects, nanomaterials are defined by dimensions on the order of one-billionth of a meter (tens of thousands of times smaller than the width of a hair). A wide variety of unique optical, electronic, structural and mechanical properties have been discovered for materials with nanoscopic dimensions. Cornell's Materials Science and Engineering department excels in the areas of nanoparticle growth, block-copolymer structure-direction, nanocomposites, high resolution lithography and nanomechanical characterization.
